Sweet Chestnuts & Vineyard Walk – Italy Walking Holiday

This walking holiday in Italy will take you through the very heart of South Tyrol in the shade of the mighty Dolomites Mountains. Firstly you will follow the 'Kestnweg' (Sweet Chestnut Walk), followed by a variety of vineyards and orchards in the most beautiful part of South Tyrol.

Famous Lake Kalterer See is a further highlight, as well as fortresses and castles. Many winecellars are tempting to stop at and taste the best South Tyrolean wines. Follow the traces of Empress Elisabeth from Austria in Merano, a bath town with the charm of the Hapsburg Empire.

This tour has a seven day, six night itinerary.

Day 1 - Individual journey to Brixen. Stroll through the arcades of Brixen and see the marvellous dome district and the Bishop's castle during your first day.

Day 2 - Brixen to Klausen. From Brixen you will walk on mountain Pfeffersberg. Following the terraces you pass pleasant little hamlets and working mountain farms. To the south you can enjoy a panoramic view of the mighty Dolomite Mountain peaks. Reach Feldthurns and the monastery Saben, the 'Acropolis of South Tyrol' and then you reach Durer town Klausen.

Day 3 - Klausen to Ritten - Bolzano. After a short coach transfer to Barbian, you walk on Ritten, a marvellous high plateau above Eisack valley with stunning views towards the Dolomite Mountains and the Schlern Massif. In the afternoon you pass the famous earth pyramids before taking a cable car trip down to Bolzano.

Day 4 - Bolzano to Kalterer See. Explore the famous vineyards around the most famous lake of South Tyrol on Lake Kalterer See. Fortresses, castles, monasteries and courtyards are dotted between the vineyards, adding a historical characteristic for today's walking stage.

Day 5 - Round trip to Tramin. Picturesque vineyards, fascinating countryside and the largest wine-cellars of many famous wine-producers can be found here. Enjoy the wonderful view from the Alteburg over the whole vineyard and enjoy tasting some of the fine wines.

Day 6 - Lake Kalterer See to Lana - Meran. The famous beautiful Trappeiner path guides you to the bath town Merano. Empress Elisabeth of Austria used to be a regular visitor of the thermal spa, loving the warm climate and picturesque flair.
