Dordogne Perigord – France Walking Tour

This self guided walking holiday in France allows you to explore the area of Sarlat. The area which is formed like a half-moon, is called Perigord Noir. On this holiday you will be able to discover dark oak and pine forests, flocks of quacking geese and round stone-huts. Follow the river Dordogne through the Perigord past the beautiful French castles, medieval towns and witnesses of the stone-age.

This tour has an eight day, seven night itinerary.

Day 1 - Individual journey to Sarlat and arrive at your first accommodation provider.

Day 2 – Enjoy a round trip of Sarlat, officially named "Sarlat-La-Caneda", is an idyllic small town in "Perigord Noir". It is a beautifully maintained old town with houses from the 15th and 16th century and the honey and ochre coloured walls emanate a special atmosphere. Take a walk through the old town to the numerous points of interest. Feel the flair of cool, shady alleys and inner courtyards.

Day 3 – Walk from Sarlat to Domme. First you will walk through the forest to the Dordogne and then follow the relaxing river bank to Monlord. Continue onto Domme, where you will stay overnight. The well maintained Bastide occupies a spectacular view on a rocky outcrop over the Dordogne. Enjoy a stroll through the village with small shops, offering arts and crafts as well as local specialities.

Day 4 – Walk from Domme to St. Cyprien. The highlight of this walk is the splendid castles of Castelnaud and Millandes, which you should not miss to visit. Afterwards follow the idyllic river walk to Beynac, where you have a transfer to your hotel in Les Eyzies.

Day 5 – Enjoy a circular walk of Dordogne & Vezere. In the morning you will have a short transfer to St.Cyprien. You will then walk through the valley of Dordogne into the valley of river Vezere, a likewise characteristic of the Perigord. Here you find pre-historic wall paintings, caves and other sanctuaries that witness the existence of pre-historic men. Visit the castle Tayac in Les Eyzies, exhibiting a Neanderthal.

Day 6 – Walk from Les Eyzies to Montignac and follow the Vezere up-river, crossing it several times. You will walk through many small villages that are pure Dordogne. Be sure to have a picnic with the local produce of baguettes, cheese and wine. This night you will stay in the lovely village of Montignac.

Day 7 – Enjoy a circular walk of the Caves of Laucaux. Walk to the caves of Lascaux, part of UNESCO Heritage with the oldest paintings of mankind. Visit the reproductions in a mock-up of the caves. In the afternoon, you can take a canoe trip to Saint-Leon-sur- Vezere, a gorgeous village with cozy cafes near by the water.

Day 8 - Individual departure or extra days.
