Danube 4 Countries – Austria Cycling Tour

Accompanied by your floating hotel, cycle along Europe's second largest river, the Danube, from the charming Bavarian “three river city” of Passau, into the heart of the once glorious Imperial and Royal Monarchy. Enjoy three of the most enchanting European capitals: the lively Vienna, the Slovak coronation city of Bratislava at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains and Budapest, the "Hungarian Danube Queen"!  Discover the breathtaking natural wonder of the  of the Schlögener Donauschlinge (the “Great Loop”, a 180º turn in the river direction) and immerse yourself in legendary Wachau with its vineyard terraces, enchanted castles and monasteries. Then Vienna, with an abundance of sights. A city which you really need to experience for yourself.  Sights like St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the city hall and the world’s oldest Ferris Wheel (Riesenrad) are easy to reach during a wonderful sightseeing tour by bike. A stroll through the Naschmarkt (the famous food market) is a wonderful cultural and culinary adventure. You can also relax at any of the cosy coffee houses or at a typical traditional Viennese wine tavern in the suburbs.

This tour has an eight day, seven night itinerary.

Day 1 - Saturday, Passau to Engelhartszell. 
Individual arrival in the "Three River City". Settle into the cabin then take time to explore this wonderful citywith the 'world's greatest church organ' at the Stephansdom and its charming Old Town. Embarkation is around 5 p.m. and departure around 7 p.m. Enjoy your first dinner on board and an evening cruise to Engelhartszell.

Day 2 - Sunday, Engelhartszell - Brandstatt – Bratislava - Great Loop. 
The day starts in Engelhartszell and you cycle off towards the  where you head towards the Schlögener Donauschlinge (Great Loop), one of the most beautiful and original sectors of the Danube. Cycle through small villages and past cosy must-visit taverns. Board again in Brandstatt then "sail into the night" towards Bratislava.

Day 3 - Monday, Bratislava, bike tour. (Optional) 
Arrive at Bratislava around noon. Start cycling via Hainburg to the imposing Imperial Palace of Hof with beautifully terraced gardens and an idyllic manor farm.The rise continues to Devin and then back to Bratislava. 
In the evening there is an optional tour by mini train and foot to discover hidden alleys of Bratislava and all the sights of this metropolis. Overnight cruise to Budapest.

Day 4 - Tuesday, Budapest (day of rest)
City tour by coach (Hop on/Hop off or bicycle (optional), roundtrip to Szentendre. In the early morning, enjoy the panoramic view of the Danube's gorgeous landscape on the Sundeck. The gateway to Budapest is over-whelming, as many of the famous tourist features are situated directly next to the river bank. In the afternoon you can explore the city during a city tour by coach which is optional. Nearby is the Margaretheninsel which is well worth a short bike ride, or the charming town of Szentendre with its Mediterranean atmosphere and lively art life. Overnight cruise to Visegrad.

Day 5 - Wednesday, Danube Bend | Visegrad – Esztergom. 
The Danube bend is definitely one of most delightful and attractive parts and is called the Hungarian Wachau. Starting in Visegrad with its famous fortress and the ruins of the former palace there are two routes to choose from, the first and longer one includes a side trip to the island of Szentendre and the baroque village of Vác, which has been influenced by the architects of the Austrian empress Maria Theresia. The second leads you directly to the bishop-town of Esztergom, with its gorgeous basilica, Hungary's largest Catholic Church, which overlooks the village. Overnight cruise to Vienna.

Day 6 - Thursday, Vienna-Nussdorf / (Korneuburg may also be possible) (day of rest)
Either a City tour by bike or Hop on/Hop off  bus (optional).
Use the time and be sure to see the most famous places of interest like the St. Stephens Cathedral and the Hofburg. The gorgeous boulevard with the Burgtheater, the State Opera House and the town hall takes you back to the past. The evening ends impressively with a Waltz and Operetta concert (optional, not included). Overnight cruise to Rossatz (Wachau).

Day 7 - Friday, Wachau (Rossatz) – Melk – Pöchlarn. 
The last cycling day is a special highlight! Amidst small dreamy villages, apricot trees, vineyards, castles, monasteries and ruins, this gentle hilly landscape enchants everybody. A powerful ruin looms above the small Baroque town of Dürnstein, whilst the blue tower of the monastery is a prominent Wachau landmark. In Spitz (why not try the optional wine-tasting) there are comfy wine taverns right along the bike path. You owe it to yourself to take a break! Board again in the small village Pöchlarn. After the farewell gala dinner, you start “sailing” back to Passau.

Day 8 - Saturday, Passau. The journey draws to an end. Enjoy, one last time, the first sunbeams and the peaceful silence of the Danube Valley as you admire the views from the deck. Take a last look at the Schlögener Schlinge ("Great Loop") before you arrive relaxed at Passau. Arrival: approx at noon, disembarkation half an hour later. We recommend to arrange connecting trips from 2 p.m. onwards.
