Experience ten Austrian lakes on our self guided cycling tour. Enjoy flat cycling routes on the lake shores and the banks of the River Salzach and much hillier routes inbetween. This tour will take through a variety of terrain including countryside meadows, wooded paths, country lanes and side streets.

7 night 8 day itinerary

Day 1 - Individual arrival in Salzburg or at Trumer Seen Lakes.

You will be given a welcome briefing, and will receive your rental bikes. If you start at the Trumer Seen Lakes you start with day 3 of the route description below and your last stage leads you from Salzburg to Trumer Lakes.

Day 2 - From Salzburg to Trumer Lakes/Lake Wallersee.

Cycle along the River Salzach to Oberndorf, the origin of the Christmas carol "Silent Night".  Whilst here visit Arnsdorf, the Silent Night Museum and Michaelbeuern abbey. Head off to the Trumer Lakes Obertrumer See, Mattsee and Grabensee and Lake Wallersee.

Day 3 - From Trumer Lakes/Lake Wallersee to Lake Mondsee/Lake Attersee.

From Trumer Lake you'll travel through the Egel Lakes nature reserve to the village of Schleedorf. Continue cycling to the idylic Lake Irrsee. Overnight stay close to Lake and Mondsee castle and the Smoke House - Mondsee Open-Air Museum.  The most important exhibit on display is the authentic Mondseeland farmstead and its numerous in-house exhibitions. The building itself is made of wood and comprises the living area, the stables and the barn, all under the same roof. Every room is fully-equipped with tools, things of everyday life and farm machinery providing insights into the way of life on a traditional farm. The grain was stored on the upper floor and - thanks to the missing flue - also dried by the smoke. Therefore, the original name of this Mondseeland farm type was "Rauchhaus" (Smoke House).

Day 4 - Lake Mondsee/Lake Attersee and Lake Traunsee

For arrivals between 01/07. and 31/08 there is a ferry trip to Weyregg, outside of these dates you cycle along Lake Attersee.  From here, cycle through Aurachtal valley to Gmunden on Lake Traunsee. Whilst here visit Ort Castle and the ceramic factory.  Head off then to Altmunster to see the bicycle museum and on to Traunkirchen where the lovely church  is known for its wood-carved "Fischerkanzel", a unique golden "Fisherman's" Pulpit.

Day 5 - From Lake Traunsee to Bad Goisern via Lake Hallstattersee

Set off by train from Lake Traunsee uphill to Obertraun by Lake Hallstättersee and the Dachstein Ice Caves. Cycle along the lake shore to Hallstatt, location of the oldest salt mine in the world.  Hallstatt is known as "the most beautiful Lake town in the world" .  Then it's on to your accommodation for the evening in Bad Goisern or one of the neighbouring towns.

Day 6 - From Bad Goisern to Lake Wolfgangsee.

Cycle through Bad Ischl past the Emperor’s Park, the Emperor’s Villa and Empress Sissi’s Teahouse along the Ichler Ache river . You will pass St. Wolfgang with its parish church, White Horse Inn and rack railway on to the Schafberg mountain.  Then head on to Strobl, Lake Abersee, the Zinkenbachklamm gorge and the Mozart village of St Gilgen on Lake Wolfgangsee.

Day 7 - From Lake Wolfgangsee to Salzburg.

Today you will follow the cycle route to St. Gilgen, the short hiking trail into the Tiefbrunnau, past the Hintersee lake, and the Strubklamm gorge into the Wiestal valley (dam). You will go through the Glasenbachklamm into the Salzachtal valley. Just before reaching Salzburg, it is worth visiting the castle Schloss Hellbrunn (park, zoo, water games). Your destination is the festival and Mozart city of Salzburg with its numerous attractions (fortress, old town).
