10 Lakes - Austria Cycling Holiday

Experience ten Austrian lakes on our self guided cycling tour. Enjoy flat cycling routes on the lake shores and the banks of the River Salzach and much hillier routes inbetween. This tour will take through a variety of terrain including countryside meadows, wooded paths, country lanes and side streets.

Day 1 - Arrive to Salzburg or Trumer Lakes. You will be given a welcome briefing, and will receive your rental bikes. If you start at the Trumer Lakes you start with day 3 of the route description below and your last stage leads you from Salzburg to Trumer Lakes. 

Day 2 - Salzburg - Trumer Lakes/Lake Wallersee. Cycle along the River Salzach to Oberndorf, the Silent Night town with its chapel, Arnsdorf (Silent-Night-Museum) and Michaelbeuern abbey. Head off to the Trumer Lakes Obertrumer See, Mattsee and Grabensee and maybe even Lake Wallersee.

Day 3 - Trumer Lakes/Lake Wallersee - Lake Mondsee/Lake Attersee.
From Trumer Lake you'll travel through a nature reserve of the Egel Lakes to the village of Schleedorf. Continue cyclingto Lake Irrsee, through the 'dark hole' and enjoy an overnight stay in Mondsee or Attersee.

Day 4 - Lake Mondsee/Lake Attersee and Lake Traunsee
Take the ferry to Weyregg and then cycle through Aurachtal to Lake Traunsee, Gmunden, Altmunster and Traunkirchen.

Day 5 - Lake Traunsee - Lake Hallstattersee - Bad Goisern. (6 night tour goes direct from Lake Traunsee to Lake Wolfgangsee  approx. 45-50 km (28 - 31 miles))
Set off by train from Lake Traunsee uphill to Obertraun and the Dachstein Ice Caves. Cycle along the lake shore to Hallstatt, which is known as "the most beautiful Lake town in the world" and then on to Bad Goisern before reaching your accommodation for the evening.

Approx. 20-35 km (12-22 miles)


Day 6 - Bad Goisern - Lake Wolfgangsee. Cycle through Bad Ischl along the Ichler Ache. You will pass St. Wolfgang with its parish church and rack railway and then head on to Strobl, Abersee and the Zinkenbachklamm or the Mozart village of St Gilgen on Lake Wolfgangsee.

Approx. 35 km (22 miles)


Day 7 - Lake Wolfgangsee – Salzburg. The day starts with a short cycle tour of St Gilgen in the morning before walking to Tiefbrunnau (your bikes will be transporte.) Cycle downhill to Lake Hintersee and through the Strubklamm gorge into Weistal. Just before Salzburg it is worth visiting Hellbrunn with its castle, parks and fountains. Continue to the Mozart town of Salzburg.

Approx. 40-50 km +  walking tour (25-31 miles)

Day 8 - Individual Depature

Alternative: Shortened tour - 7 days / 6 nights (approx. 250 km)

Day 1: Arrival in Salzburg or at the Trumer Seen lakes

Day 2: Salzburg to Trumer Seen lakes/Lake Wallersee approx. 45-55 km

Day 3: Trumer Seen lakes/Lake Wallersee to Lake Mondsee approx. 50km

Day 4: Lake Mondsee to Lake Traunsee approx. 50-80km

Day 5: Lake Traunsee to Bad Ischl to Lake Wolfgangsee approx. 45-50 km

Follow the Traun until you get to the "emperor town ͞" of Bad Ischl (Kaiserpark, Kaiservilla, Sissi’s tea house, Cafè Zauner) and then along the Ischler Ache to Lake Wolfgang.

Day 6: Lake Wolfgangsee to Salzburg approx. 40-50 km + walking tour

Day 7: Departure or extension

Alternative: Extended tour 9 days / 8 nights (approx. 295 km)

Day 1: Arrival in Salzburg or at the Trumer Seen lakes

Day 2: Salzburg to Ibmer Moor approx. 45 km

Along the Salzach to Franking or more specifically Dorfibm via Oberndorf (where Silent Night originates

from) and also via Lake Höllerer and Holzöstersee

Day 3: Ibmer Moor to Trumer Seen lakes/Lake Wallersee approx. 45-55 km

Day 4: Trumer Seen lakes/Lake Wallersee to Lake Mondsee approx. 50km

Day 5: Lake Mondsee to Lake Traunsee approx. 50-80km

Day 6: Lake Traunsee to Lake Hallstättersee to Bad Goisern/surrounding area approx. 20-35 km

Day 7: Bad Goisern/surrounding area to Lake Wolfgangsee approx. 35km
