This is a beautiful 8 day cycling route along the Danube from Passau in Germany to Vienna in Austria.

The tour takes in a number of locations including vineyards and apricot orchards. The tour is ideally suited to a family and is mainly flat with some gentle hills. The majority takes place on cycle paths with no traffic. The tour is an 8 day tour, but additional nights are available on request at info@compass-holidays.com in Vienna, Linz, Passau and Sharding.

Day 1 - Arrive in Passau - 'the city of three rivers'. Day 2 - Stroll through the city of Passau and visit the dome, before cycling along the Danube to Englehartszell via Obernzell. You'll also pass through the nature reserve Donauleiten with its stunning landscape features to Schlogener Schilinge. Day 3 - You'll continue to cycle along the river, passing a number of old fortresses. In the evening, you'll be able to enjoy a stroll through the town of Linz where you are staying, a beautiful town that is known as 'the capital of upper Austria'. Day 4 - You have the option today to detour into Enns, the oldest city of Austria, before continuing along the river past Mauthausen, to Perg. Perg is a lovely baroque style city with the Danube Skipper Museum and the oldest theatre in Austria. Day 5 - From Perg, you'll travel to Marbach, a harmless place to cycle but once a place feared by Danube boaters. Day 6 - One of the highlights of the Danube trail is Wachau. You'll cycle to Melk with its Benedictine monastry, which is the gateway to Wachau. You'll continue along the river to Krems, past vineyards where you will get to experience a wine-tasting session of the local produce. Day 7 - You'll leave Krems via the monastry and cycle to the flower-city Tulln. Visit Klosterneuberg with its art and museums, castles and a horse-drawn carriage tour of the centre. Day 8 - Depart If you have the time, it is advisable to book some extra days in Vienna to enjoy the city and its surroundings.
