Innsbruck to Lake Garda
Like pearls along the string of the rivers Inn and Adige the well known cities of Innsbruck in Tyrol, Merano and Trento in South Tyrol are interspersed by the emerald lakes of Reschensee, Kalterer See and Lake Garda, which complete this jewael of a cycle tour. This tour uses cycle paths along the river valleys of Inn and Adige and many country lanes between fruit orchards and vineyards. There is a transfer from the Inn valley to the Reschen Pass, then 1200 m ride downhill. In between there are some short climbs but it is mainly flat or downhill. The tour is 8 days long and approximately 320km. Day 1 - Individual arrival to Innsbruck
Explore the famous old town with its city tower and medieval “Golden Roof”. Information meeting and distribution of rental bicycles.
Day 2: Innsbruck – Imst approx. 65 km
Cycle along an old bridle path beside the river Inn at the foot of Martin's Wall. Pass through tiny villages and hamlets to Stams, where you can visit a Baroque monastery. Continue via Haiming to Imst where you will spend the night.
Day 3: Imst – Burgeis/Mals approx. 50 km + 40 km bus
Continue along the River Inn past the Zams monastery to Landeck, where you will take a bus to Nauders. A 100m climb will take you to the Reschen Pass and then back downhill to Lake Reschensee. You'll then take minor roads to Mals or Burgeis at the foot of the Marienburg fortress.
Day 4: Burgeis/Mals – Merano approx. 65 km
Today you will travel to Glurns with its fully intact medieval city wall and on past the ruins of Montani. The tour continues through Schlanders and down to Merano. Fortresses and castles ‘stand guard’ along the route and you will have impressive views of Ortler massive and Stilfserjoch . If you feel like shortening the route you can use little Vinschgau train that was restored in 2004.
Day 5: Valley Passeiertal/Meran approx. 40 km
Leave Meran and cycle to see Today you can ride to Passeiertal Valley and Sandwirt (birthplace of Andreas Hofer), here you walk along famous Trappeinerweg or alternatively go on a shopping tour in Meran.
Day 6: Merano – Kaltern/Tramin/Auer approx. 45/50 km
Cycle from Meran through orchards and vinyards of the South Tyrlean ‘Wine Street’. Visit the famous Schnatterpeck-altar in Lana. Pass fortresses, castles and ruins, such as Hocheppan with its famous frescos and the “dome in the country” St Pauls on Lake Kalterer See. Your overnight is in one of the picturesque wine-grower towns of Kaltern, Tramin or Auer.
Day 7: Tramin/Kaltern/Auer – Trento approx. 45 km
Today is mainly along the River Adige, through vineyards to Salurn where the language border between German and Italian runs. Follow the dyke-cycle path as it runs between hills covered by famous Trentino vineyards. You end the day in the famous old town of Trento where you will spend the night. Take time to explore Trento with its dome and Buonconsiglio castle .
Day 8: Trento – Riva/Torbole/Arco approx. 50 km
You continue to cycle along the River Adige to the old Tyrolean border city of Roverto to Mori. Here the tour leaves the river and turns west to Lake Garda. After a brief climb on Passo S. Giovanni (150 m) you head down to the lake and reach Torbole, Riva or Arco.
