This tour includes two circular walks starting and ending in Bath. Walk 1 – Leave town through Batheaston passing the splendid facade on the house of the Woods family who were largely responsible for putting the town on the map in the 18th century. Climb to the Iron Age fort on Solsbury Hill immortalised in the song by Peter Gabriel. Cross the valley of the Lam Brook through the villages of Upper Swainswick and Woolley, climb to Beckfords Tower and for the most spectacular view tackle it’s 156 steps. Return to the hotel through Lansdown, one of the cities finest suburbs with grand houses and excellent views all the way down, passing the Building of Bath Museum. Walk 2 – Walk across the Downs and through the woods above Bathampton with views east across the Avon valley. At Claverton Manor you can visit the American Museum with its 18th and 19th century room settings and a wonderful collection of quilts. The little valley village of Monkton Combe provides the more rural aspect to this walk before heading back into the city past Prior Park, a beautiful landscaped garden and the inspiration for Squire Allworthy’s estate in Henry Fieldings bawdy novel ‘Tom Jones’.

This tour will include both of the walks above, but will also include a third circular walk on the last day. Walk 3 – The sights of the city are well known and almost too numerous to mention but here is a sample to give you the flavour. Below the streets of the present city you can see the remains of its Roman predecessor and the famous Baths while just above the Abbey church tells of the very different mediaeval times. There are many grand Georgian buildings from city’s great boom time as a Spa with the Royal Crescent, the Circus and the Pulteney Bridge among the finest.
